Whistler Waves Associated With Electron Beams in Magnetopause Reconnection Diffusion Regions

چکیده

Whistler waves are often observed in magnetopause reconnection associated with electron beams. We analyze seven MMS crossings surrounding the diffusion region (EDR) to study role of beams whistler excitation. Waves have two major types: (a) Narrow-band high ellipticities and (b) broad-band that more electrostatic significant variations wave normal angles. While both types beams, key difference is anisotropy background population, perpendicular parallel anisotropies, respectively. The linear instability analysis suggests first type mainly due anisotropy, beam contributing additional cyclotron resonance enhance growth. second broadband excited via Landau resonance, as seen one event, induces an mode. results supported by particle-in-cell simulations. infer occurs downstream central EDR, where electrons experience Betatron acceleration form anisotropy; EDR guide field reconnection. A parametric conducted analysis. alone above ?3 likely excites mode waves. Large drifts cause Doppler shifts may lead left-hand polarizations ion frame. Future studies needed determine whether observation covers a broader parameter regime understand competition between other instabilities.

Whistler Emission by Electron Beams

Experimental and theoretical investigation of whistler waves produced in the interaction of a density modulated electron beam with a magnetized plasma are presented for the conditions of active space experiments in the Earth ionosphere as well as for the case of overdense laboratory plasmas. Structures of the electromagnetic fields far and near the beam, efficiency of the beam modulation, emitt...

Electron-scale sheets of whistlers close to the magnetopause

Whistler emissions close to the magnetopause on the magnetospheric side are investigated using the four Cluster spacecraft. The waves are found to be generated in thin (electron-scale) sheets moving with the plasma drift velocity. A feature in the electron data coincides with the waves; hot magnetospheric electrons disappear for a few satellite spins. This produces or enhances a temperature ani...

Electron heating by nonlinear whistler waves

Nonlinear whistler-mode phenomena observed in laboratory plasmas will be addressed. Nonlinearities arise when strong waves modify the density, temperature and magnetic field, all of which affect the wave propagation. A brief review of thermal filamentation will be given. The main focus is on the magnetic nonlinearity of whistler modes whose wave magnetic fields exceed the ambient magnetic field...

Parametric validations of analytical lifetime estimates for radiation belt electron diffusion by whistler waves

The lifetimes of electrons trapped in Earth’s radiation belts can be calculated from quasi-linear pitch-angle diffusion by whistler-mode waves, provided that their frequency spectrum is broad enough and/or their average amplitude is not too large. Extensive comparisons between i proved analytical lifetime estimates and full numerical calculations have been performed in a broad parameter range r...

Whistler Waves Emitted by a Thin Modulated Electron Beam

The theory of whistler wave interaction with a modulated electron beam of finite radius, injected parallel to the magnetic field in an unbounded space plasma is considered The study is done in the case of sheared whistlers interacting with the thin beam, when the parallel wave number is very small compared to the perpendicular one. The electromagnetic fields inside and outside the beam are dete...
